Ah-ha Moment about High Heels

My right foot has felt weird in every pair of walking shoes I've worn in the last 9 months or so. The first pair of shoes didn't seem to bend correctly - but only the right shoe. The next pair of shoes didn't bend correctly either - in the exact same spot of the right shoe. Even the pair I returned because they are too heavy seemed to bother my right foot. Hmmm, is there a pattern, Cindi?

Today I had my "ah-ha" moment. I wore high-heeled boots to the grocery store because my jeans are too long to wear tennis shoes. While walking around the store my right foot started hurting me in the exact spot where it bends for racewalking. The more I walked, the more it ached!

I wear heels nearly every day. And, because my jeans all run long (and I am short) I usually wear heels with jeans, too. Though my feet occasionally hurt at the end of the day, it hasn't been a big deal. I haven't even paid much attention to it until today.

With Big Sur coming up, I'm a little bit worried. Though I don't like the look, and my pants are all hemmed for heels, I will try wearing flats this week and see if it helps.

Anyone else face something similar?

Hi Cindi,

Thanks for your comment on my blog. I'm doing the Salt Lake Half Marathon www.saltlakecitymarathon.com because it's highly accessible (I live here!) and a pretty course. At one point it goes just a few blocks from my house, so my husband and kids can come out and cheer me on :) and they can then drive to the finish to see me there too.

You will do fine in the 21-miler even though you didn't get in the longest walk. You have been training well on the other walks and I think the only difference will be in how fast you can finish - you will definitely be able to finish.

The high heels thing - hmmmm, that might be it. I don't wear them very often because I'm 5'8" and don't need to, and I'm on my feet a lot at work (I work in a lab). But it does sound like your Aha! moment has a lot of bearing in reality.

Good luck on your race! That would be such a fun one to do w/you guys.

It's great when you have people cheering you on. For my first marathon, my husband took my daughter to three different spots along the course. It was so fun finding them! Now that my son is pretty big, he occassionally runs some of the events I enter. I love it when he waits and the finish line and cheers for me.

Because I have been inathletic most of my life, I never anticipated that my kids would see me do anything athletic, let alone tell me they were proud of me for my accomplishments. It's a great feeling!
